No treatment can replace the importance of weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. However, many people struggle with localized fat deposits that don’t respond to exercise and dieting. These stubborn fat pockets may persist even if the individual is otherwise slim. In these cases, CoolSculpting® is an excellent option for targeting these areas and achieving a more contoured figure. Good candidates for CoolSculpting® should be overall healthy and at or near their ideal weight.

CoolSculpting® vs. Liposuction

Unlike some of the other recent advances in fat-removal technology, such as SmartLipo® and VASER®, CoolSculpting® is not a new form of liposuction. It is a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction, but it is also not a replacement, and some patients may be better suited to liposuction. CoolSculpting® has several limitations:

  • Results take time to appear, and two or more treatments are often needed
  • Fat reduction is not as precisely “sculpted” as it can be with liposuction
  • It cannot eliminate as much fat as liposuction during a given treatment
  • Does not reduce skin

If you want to get rid of fat in the neck or calves, CoolSculpting® is not a good option. People looking to remove a lot of fat at one time may want liposuction. If you have a more significant amount of excess skin, you will want to consider a body lifting procedure, such as a tummy tuck, that can get rid of skin and fat.

The CoolSculpting® technology works by cooling targeted fat cells to the point of freezing. Your body then flushes out these crystalized fat cells, reducing fat in the area. For this process to work, the CoolSculpting® device needs to fit snugly over the targeted area of fat to allow for precise cooling. There are multiple sizes and shapes of CoolSculpting® applicators so that they can be fitted to the treatment area for each patient.

Dr. Rapaport and Coolspa use the latest technology and have several applicator options to provide the best treatment for each of our patients. This includes CoolSculpting® Elite, the most advanced CoolSculpting® machine with two applicators so multiple areas can be treated simultaneously. We also offer CoolMini and CoolSmooth.

CoolMini

The CoolMini is a small applicator designed to target smaller fat deposits or more bony, curved areas that aren’t possible to treat with a larger applicator. The CoolMini is a great option for treating fat under the chin or above the knee. For example, we may use one to three CoolMini applicators to treat a double chin, overlapping them to address the entire area of concern.

Some other CoolMini treatment areas include:

  • The area in front of the underarm
  • The area behind the underarm
  • Inner knee area and fat deposits found above and below the knee

CoolSmooth

Coolspa is also proud to be among the first practices in the northeastern United States to introduce the CoolSmooth applicator. This applicator is an enormous advancement in CoolSculpting® technology. Unlike the other applicators, which must grab the tissue and hold it inside, the CoolSmooth simply rests on the area to be treated. This allows us to treat the outer thighs and other fatty bulges that may not be adequately pinchable for the traditional CoolSculpting® applicator. 

We have thus far seen some dramatic outer thigh results and are thrilled to bring this technology to our clients. Best of all, we routinely perform DualSculpting (CoolSculpting® Elite) with these applicators, treating both sides simultaneously so that you can get twice the results in half the time.

The first step for CoolSculpting® patients is a consultation with one of our body contouring specialists. They will perform a thorough evaluation and discuss your goals to ensure your candidacy for CoolSculpting® and create a customized treatment plan based on your needs and goals.

CoolSculpting® procedures are fairly straightforward. First, your technician will apply a protective gel pad on the targeted area, followed by the applicator. This applicator uses vacuum pressure to pull the fat bulge up to its cooling surface, allowing precise delivery of cold to the fat cells. You will feel pressure and intense cold at first, but the area quickly becomes numb, and the treatment is painless. A CoolSculpting® session can last 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the number of treatment areas.

One of the best things about CoolSculpting® is that there’s no downtime! Patients can return to normal activity or even go to the gym for a light workout immediately after treatment. While you may have some numbness in the treated area, this will resolve predictably in about two to four weeks. Most redness caused by the cold fades within a few hours, though occasionally, patients have minor bruising from the suction that may last a few days. The treatment area may be slightly sore or swollen for a few days.

Because recovery is so easy, CoolSculpting® can fit into a busy schedule and does not need to interfere with other aspects of one’s life. We have treated people who have arrived directly from the airport, are about to appear in public, or have a big event in a few days. You can simply resume your life. However, we may recommend avoiding vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for the first 24 hours.

CoolSculpting® is an ideal body sculpting option for many people, helping them reduce stubborn fat and feel more confident in their appearance. Most patients see visible results after a single treatment and optimal results with two or three sessions. Since it takes time for your body to remove the crystalized fat cells, CoolSculpting® results take a few months to appear. Patients see an average fat reduction of 20-25% in treated areas.

Since it damages fat cells, prompting your body to remove them, CoolSculpting® removes unwanted fat permanently. These fat cells will not return. However, the remaining cells in the area can expand if you gain weight, making a healthy lifestyle essential for long-term success. CoolSculpting® results typically last as long as you maintain a stable weight.
