Asymmetry

Everyone has at least a little asymmetry on their face. The head forms as two halves that combine, and one side is always slightly larger than the other, so asymmetry is inevitable.

A perfectly symmetrical face would look unnatural to us, in fact. However, too much asymmetry in your features can have a negative effect on your appearance.

Some people find themselves with aesthetic concerns regarding body asymmetry. Women are often frustrated by naturally asymmetrical breasts or asymmetry that results from breast changes after pregnancy or nursing. Poor results from body contouring treatments can also leave patients with asymmetry.

If you are bothered by asymmetry in your face, breasts, or body, cosmetic treatments to enhance your features and improve balance may be beneficial. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Rapaport can help you create a personalized treatment plan that restores your confidence.

Learn More About Asymmetry

Though slightly asymmetrical features are normal, if the difference is noticeable, you may be unhappy with how it looks. A cheekbone that appears higher than the other or an asymmetrical nose can distract from your appearance and disrupt facial harmony. You might feel that one side of your face looks better than the other and seek to mirror that side more closely.

Asymmetrical Face Treatments

If you are bothered by facial asymmetry, there are two likely treatment options: dermal fillers and rhinoplasty. During a detailed consultation, Dr. Rapaport will evaluate your facial structure and help you determine if treatment is appropriate.

In the case of an asymmetrical nose, he may recommend surgical rhinoplasty. A “nose job” can improve the size and shape of the nose to correct irregularities, create a more feminine shape, or refine the nostrils. If you want only subtle and temporary changes to the nose, liquid rhinoplasty may be an option. This non-surgical alternative uses dermal fillers to add strategic volume to the nose.

Dermal fillers can also improve symmetry in other areas of the face. We offer several popular brands of fillers, such as Juvederm® and Radiesse®, with different formulas to treat different concerns and areas. These convenient injectables can add subtle volume to your jawline, cheeks, or lips to enhance your features and improve symmetry.

Most women have subtle differences between their breasts. One might be slightly larger or higher. These slight variations are normal and not typically a cause for concern, though a doctor should evaluate sudden or significant changes. For many women, any minor breast asymmetry is inconspicuous. But some women have more noticeable asymmetries that bother them and may even make it difficult to find the right bra size.

Though it may be more visible in the breasts, asymmetry is common throughout the body. Most people don’t have noticeable body asymmetry that impacts their appearance. However, some people have unsatisfactory body sculpting procedures that leave them with irregularities, usually due to overcorrection. Dr. Rapaport often performs revision liposuction for patients who have had a poor outcome elsewhere.

Asymmetrical Breasts and Body Treatments

The best way to improve breast asymmetry is typically with breast augmentation. A single implant, or two slightly different-sized implants, can enhance the woman’s breasts and balance their size and shape.

In the case of body asymmetry from poorly performed liposuction, Dr. Rapaport offers multiple advanced liposuction techniques and helps many patients regain a smooth, balanced contour. Revision liposuction may involve fat grafting to improve asymmetry further. This is done by removing fat from an area with excess and transferring it to an area with too little. In some cases, fat transfer breast augmentation might be an option to correct minor breast asymmetry.
