PRP for Hair Loss

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly referred to as PRP, is a growing therapy in the aesthetic community thanks to its numerous benefits and versatile applications. This naturally-derived injectable can be added to skin rejuvenation treatments like microneedling, applied topically to the skin, or injected into the scalp to combat thinning hair.

At Rapaport Plastic Surgery, we combine PRP with an additive to proliferate the number of exosomes within your PRP to create the SuperShot for even better benefits.

Many people experience hair loss, especially as they age. The condition can have multi-faceted causes and present itself in various ways, from male pattern baldness to general thinning. Regardless of type or cause, hair loss can be an extremely frustrating and distressing problem, especially when it doesn’t respond to at-home or over-the-counter treatments. Not everyone is willing or able to undergo a surgical hair transplant, either. Fortunately, PRP injections offer a minimally invasive solution for almost anyone with mild to moderate hair loss or those looking to improve the volume and density of their hair.

Learn More About PRP for Hair Loss

PRP is an injectable treatment derived from one’s own blood. Because it’s a natural biologic, there is little to no risk of rejection or an adverse reaction, and the treatment is safe for almost anyone.

We typically recommend PRP for mild hair loss and thinning. It may be very effective for general hair thinning caused by aging or stress but less effective for significant bald patches, though it can help prevent balding when hair loss is caught early. Patients with more severe hair loss and balding may require a hair transplant, which may include PRP injections for optimal hair growth.

PRP may also be an ideal solution if you do not have hair loss but want to achieve thicker, healthier hair. Dr. Rapaport or a member of his team will perform a thorough evaluation during your consultation to help determine if PRP hair restoration is right for you.

Platelet-rich plasma treatments at Rapaport Plastic Surgery are unique because we combine the PRP with additional exosome support. Exosomes are tiny structures that act like messengers to your cells, carrying signals for cells to regenerate and repair damage. PRP is rich in exosomes, growth factors, and stem cells. We use an additive that exponentially increases the number of exosomes in your PRP to supercharge the serum for a rejuvenating, healing injectable called the SuperShot. PRP and exosomes are beneficial for rejuvenation on their own but even more powerful together.

Our PRP and exosome SuperShot can be injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth and restore overall health to the hair and scalp. The exosomes, growth factors, and stem cells trigger a healing response and promote new growth. This simple treatment can also be used for skin rejuvenation or paired with many of our other procedures.

PRP injections are a straightforward, easy procedure that won’t disrupt your busy schedule. The first step is a blood draw. We’ll only need a small amount, similar to what a lab test would require. The blood is placed in a centrifuge that spins it to separate the liquid plasma from other components. During this process, an additive is used to increase the number of exosomes within the PRP, thereby making the resulting serum a Supershot!.

Once the SuperShot is prepared, your provider will make several small injections in your scalp. Most patients choose to have the treatment area numbed so there is little to no pain. Even without numbing cream, the tiny needle makes for minimal discomfort. The injection process typically only takes a few minutes. Your entire PRP appointment should take an hour or less.

Since PRP is a minimally invasive injectable procedure, there is minimal to no downtime. You may resume your daily activities following treatment. Most patients have little to no side effects, thanks to the treatment’s natural ingredients and our team’s gentle technique. Some minor swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites is possible. This should subside within a few days. You should avoid washing your hair for the first 24 hours and heat styling for a few days.

The results of PRP hair restoration are gradual. It takes time for new hair to grow, though you may see improvements in your existing hair’s health and vibrancy sooner. Patients typically need a series of treatments for optimal results. Most patients need four to six monthly treatments; then, they can maintain their healthier, thicker hair with occasional injections every few months.

You’ll see the best results with PRP therapy if your hair loss is mild or in its early stages. Practicing quality hair care at home is also beneficial.
