Platelet-Rich Plasma
(PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, has become a popular rejuvenation treatment for its many benefits.

This injectable treatment uses your body’s own healing properties to boost skin or hair health. PRP injections can be a standalone treatment for skin rejuvenation or hair restoration, or they can be added on to your skin resurfacing or laser treatments.

Some of the benefits of PRP injections include:

Regulation of cell growth

Promotes production of new blood vessels

Promotes tissue repair after injury

Promotes collagen growth

Induces healthy cell production

Optimizes conditions for healing and generation of new skin

Learn More About Platelet-Rich Plasma

Since the injections are made from your own blood, almost anyone is a candidate for PRP, and there is little to no risk of an adverse reaction. Dr. Rapaport can help you determine if PRP is beneficial for you during a comprehensive consultation, during which he’ll evaluate your overall health and specific concerns. PRP is a versatile treatment that can improve various concerns, especially when paired with other rejuvenation procedures.

We may recommend PRP to boost skin health, reduce dark circles under the eyes, or combat hair thinning. It can also be administered after a laser or resurfacing procedure to optimize healing and results. Though PRP has many benefits, it may not be effective for moderate to severe skin issues or hair loss, and these conditions may require more intensive treatment options.

Rapaport Plastic Surgery combines PRP injections with exosome therapy to enhance effectiveness. Exosomes are small sac-like structures in your body that act like messengers between cells. They help stimulate damaged cells to regenerate, making them a crucial part of the body’s healing process.

Exosomes can be increased in the blood serum through an additive during the PRP extraction process to create a SuperShot. This injection has more powerful regenerative properties than PRP alone, with more growth factors and more versatile function. We use the PRP and exosome SuperShot rather than either alone to give patients superior results with an equally simple, convenient treatment.

PRP and Exosome Treatment Options

PRP and exosomes can be used in a variety of ways. One of the most common applications is PRP hair restoration, where it is injected into the scalp to treat hair thinning. PRP therapy can increase hair growth and thickness for both male and female patients struggling with thinning. It may be effective on its own for mild hair thinning, or Dr. Rapaport may use PRP in combination with the SmartGraft FUE hair transplant procedure for optimal results to reverse hair loss.

PRP is also used as a topical treatment with skin rejuvenation treatments, such as microneedling. Microneedling creates micro-channels in the skin, allowing the PRP to reach deeper levels, boosting collagen production, and treating textural concerns such as acne scarring, skin laxity, and fine lines. Similarly, laser treatments like Clear + Brilliant® gently resurface the skin, allowing PRP to penetrate deeper. The PRP also helps the skin heal faster after these treatments.

One common treatment area for PRP is under the eyes, where the combination of PRP and dermal fillers can lessen the appearance of dark circles and tear troughs.

A small amount of blood (similar to what is required for a basic lab test) is drawn. The blood is placed in a centrifuge that spins the blood quickly to separate the liquid plasma from other components. This isolated plasma is rich in stem cells, exosomes, and growth factors, which are key to your body’s natural healing and regenerative abilities.

Your provider will then inject the PRP (with increased exosomes if you opt for the SuperShot) or apply it topically to your treatment areas. For hair restoration, the PRP will be injected directly into your scalp wherever you have hair loss. With microneedling treatments like AquaGold® fine touch™, the SuperShot can be placed in the AquaGold® micro-injector device and incorporated seamlessly into your procedure. We can also apply it topically after microneedling or laser treatments.

As a simple injectable treatment designed to promote healing and regeneration, PRP does not require any downtime. Patients may have minor bruising or swelling at the injection sites for a day or two. Though PRP and exosome therapy do not require downtime alone, there may be recovery time if it’s added to another treatment, such as laser resurfacing. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions for your personalized treatment.

The results of PRP depend on how it is used. Generally, PRP promotes collagen production, healthy blood circulation, and cell turnover. The regenerative properties of PRP and exosomes can improve hair growth and skin health. Therefore, patients often enjoy healthier, thicker hair or smoother, more youthful skin. The SuperShot can often reduce complexion concerns like volume loss, uneven texture, and wrinkles.

Most patients require multiple PRP treatments for the best results, especially if it’s used as a standalone treatment. You may see benefits from PRP therapy within a few weeks, which may last several months. Dr. Rapaport may recommend maintenance treatments every six months for long-term results.
