SmartGraft® Hair Transplant

Hair loss affects many people, both men and women, young and old. In fact, up to 50% of people experience some hereditary hair loss. There are many treatments that aim to counteract hair loss, from at-home methods to over-the-counter vitamins or topicals, but they typically have little effect.

A hair transplant is the most effective way to restore hair to balding areas. Thanks to the innovative SmartGraft® technology, you can reclaim your healthy, youthful head of hair with minimal downtime or inconvenience.

Learn More About SmartGraft® Hair Transplant

Most people with balding, thinning, or a receding hairline are candidates for SmartGraft®. FUE hair transplants are often ideal for those with hereditary hair loss, such as male pattern baldness. Since SmartGraft® involves transplanting growing follicles to the balding area, candidates must have sufficient donor hair.

Patients who are interested in a hair transplant but prefer short hairstyles or have busy schedules without room for lengthy recovery may be especially well-suited to SmartGraft®. Unlike other FUE transplants, SmartGraft® has minimal scarring and recovery time.

A non-surgical treatment with PRP injections may be sufficient for patients with mild hair thinning. One of our board-certified surgeons will evaluate your condition and goals to help you determine the best hair restoration option.

FUE (follicular unite extraction) transplants involve harvesting healthy, growing hair follicles and planting them in the balding or thinning areas. These follicular units then grow new hair, replacing what was lost. The SmartGraft® device extracts just one to four follicles at a time instead of transplanting a larger strip. Working on such a small level greatly reduces scarring.

During a SmartGraft® procedure, follicular units are typically extracted from the back of the head or wherever sufficient hair exists. These are then implanted into the balding area with microscopic openings that follow the natural growth pattern of your hair.

The first step of your hair restoration treatment is a consultation with one of our surgeons. They will evaluate your medical history and scalp before proposing a plan tailored to your specific goals. Dr. Rapaport and his team will also explain the procedure and determine the number of grafts required to achieve natural-looking and effective results.

On the day of your treatment, you will be escorted to a private room where the procedure will take place. We will most likely administer a mild sedative to help you relax. Next, we will shave a small area at the back of your head and apply a local anesthetic to the implantation site. Your surgeon will then use the SmartGraft® device to gently extract the grafts. The SmartGraft® system allows for immediate collection, sorting, counting, and storage of each graft in a temperature-controlled, hydrated environment, improving graft survival and future growth.

After all the grafts have been harvested, the implantation site is prepared by applying a local anesthetic. We will then strategically create tiny openings for graft implantation, considering each graft’s angle, density, and placement, as these factors are crucial for a natural-looking outcome.

One of the primary advantages of SmartGraft® hair restoration is its short recovery time. It uses less invasive methods than traditional transplant procedures, leading to less discomfort and downtime.

Patients typically take a few days off work after SmartGraft®. Some redness and scabbing are normal for about a week, during which time you should avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to wash your hair and when to resume all regular activities. Full recovery from a SmartGraft® hair transplant takes approximately ten days.

Most of the transplanted hair will fall out in the first several weeks before new hair begins to grow. Expect to see new hair in about three months. Since hair grows at different rates, it takes several months to see full growth. Patients typically enjoy their final results in one year.

The advanced SmartGraft® technology, paired with our surgeons’ expert technique, yields natural-looking results. Transplanted hair is permanent, but it may still be affected by thinning. Your provider can recommend treatment options to prevent future hair loss if needed. Many patients benefit from PRP injections to keep their restored hair healthy and full.
