Microdermabrasion

Want to give your skin a refresh? Microdermabrasion utilizes a range of diamond tips with light suction to gently remove the outer surface layer of skin, clearing away damage and dullness.

This deep exfoliation is an excellent treatment for removing blackheads and retexturizing skin. It can be done as either a prepping treatment for a chemical peel or as part of a facial before an event.

Learn More About Microdermabrasion

Almost anyone can benefit from incorporating microdermabrasion into their skincare, regardless of skin type. Since there is no light or heat, the treatment is gentle and safe for all skin tones. It can improve a wide range of common concerns, especially when paired with other skin rejuvenation procedures like chemical peels or PRP

Some of the complexion concerns we may recommend microdermabrasion for include:

Though microdermabrasion is gentle enough for almost all skin types, we may not recommend it for extremely sensitive skin. People with rosacea or cystic acne may also need alternative treatment options.

Microdermabrasion can be done with a diamond-tipped wand or a spray of fine crystals. At Rapaport Plastic Surgery, we use a diamond-tipped wand, which is safer for your eyes and typically has less risk of side effects like dryness or redness. After the wand exfoliates your skin, we’ll use gentle suction to remove the dead skin cells and particles.

Your skin constantly creates new cells to replace old ones and repair damage. However, it can’t always keep up with the wear and tear it experiences, especially for those with acne or sun damage. This damage can leave you with redness, acne scars, dark spots, and an uneven complexion. At the same time, dead skin cells and debris gradually pile up, clogging your pores and further dulling your skin.

Deeply exfoliating your skin with microdermabrasion helps remove buildup and restore a brighter, clearer complexion. The top layer of dull, damaged, congested skin is removed, revealing a healthy new surface. This also makes your skin more able to absorb, making microdermabrasion an ideal preparation for chemical peels and facials.

Before your appointment, you can take a few steps to minimize side effects and maximize results. Be gentle with your skin for a few days prior, avoiding harsh skincare products and exfoliators. You should also avoid waxing or tanning the treatment area for a couple of weeks before microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion doesn’t require any anesthesia or numbing cream. Your Rapaport Plastic Surgery provider will use the diamond tip wand to carefully remove the outer layer of skin. The handheld wand simultaneously vacuums away the loosened debris and skin cells. Though microdermabrasion typically isn’t painful, you may feel scratching, tingling, or vibration during the treatment, which takes approximately 30 minutes for the face.

One of the things patients love most about microdermabrasion is that there’s no downtime. You can resume your regular activities immediately. Some mild redness and skin irritation are normal and should subside within a day or two. Keep your skin moisturized and avoid anything irritating it, such as heat, steam, and strenuous exercise. Though you can resume most regular skincare within two days, refrain from harsh products and exfoliation for a week. Be sure to wear sunscreen or avoid sun exposure during this time.

Remember that while microdermabrasion has no downtime and minimal side effects, there may be more recovery if combined with another treatment, such as a chemical peel. Deeper peels may require a few days of downtime. Your provider will explain what to expect from your personalized treatment plan.

You can expect a brighter, more even complexion as soon as any redness fades. Microdermabrasion is most effective for superficial pigmentation issues, dullness, blackheads, and enlarged pores. However, it may also help minimize fine lines and acne scars.

Microdermabrasion results last approximately one month since that’s how long it takes your skin cells to turn over. Patients often incorporate monthly microdermabrasion sessions into their skincare routine for optimal and lasting results. We may also recommend other facial treatments that incorporate microdermabrasion, such as DiamondGlow® or HydraFacial®, for even more benefits.
