How Long Does a Blepharoplasty Last?

March 15, 2023

Ready to show your beautiful eyes to the world again? Blepharoplasty restores a bright, alert appearance with less puffiness or sagging. After an eyelid lift, you look as rested and refreshed as you feel.

What is Blepharoplasty or an Eyelid Lift?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelid lift, removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids. This surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on the individual’s needs. An upper eyelid lift removes excess skin and sometimes bulges of fat. A lower eyelid lift may address excess fat bulges, but some have lost fat in this area. Fat transplantation can address the loss of fat under the eyes.

How Long Does Blepharoplasty Last?

The results of blepharoplasty can last for many years, but it is important to remember that the natural aging process will continue. Over time, the skin may begin to sag again, and additional procedures may be necessary to maintain the desired look. Blepharoplasty results typically last ten to fifteen years and may last longer. Although signs of aging will continue, your eyes will still look more youthful than they would have without the procedure.

How Does Blepharoplasty Work?

At Rapaport Plastic Surgery, an experienced plastic surgeon performs lower blepharoplasty under IV sedation, while those having upper blepharoplasty can choose between IV sedation and oral relaxation with a local anesthetic. Depending on your chosen procedure, it may last one to a few hours.

The procedure for blepharoplasty varies depending on the type of blepharoplasty performed. To minimize scarring, your surgeon will make incisions in the eyelids’ natural creases. The incision is made in the eyelid’s crease for upper eyelid surgery. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made either just below the eyelashes or inside the eyelid.

What is Recovery Like From Blepharoplasty?

Immediately after your procedure, you can expect some bruising and swelling. Resting with your head elevated will help control swelling and keep you comfortable. Cold compresses will also help, especially during the first few days.

Most people can resume light activity with no straining after a day or two. Many return to work after five to seven days. Most people can wear makeup after seven days, making residual bruising easier to cover. You can expect any bruising to fade in one to three weeks. Your results will improve over the next few weeks as healing continues and swelling resolves.

Am I a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are healthy adults bothered by excess skin or fat around their eyes. They should have realistic expectations and be prepared to follow recovery instructions to ensure optimal results.

It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine if blepharoplasty will provide the results you want. They can evaluate your needs and recommend the best procedure to help achieve your goals.
