While aging is a normal and natural life process and cannot be completely reversed or prevented, we need not always passively accept its undesirable effects on our skin and facial features. Wrinkles, fine lines, furrows, creases and folds can significantly change the way others perceive us, distorting our defining features and robbing us of our youthfulness before we’re ready. This in turn can lower self-confidence, leading to frustration and unhappiness.

The skin’s aging is in large part due to our particular genetics, but smoking, poor diet and excessive exposure to the sun and the elements can also play a role. Luckily, injectables such as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau can radically improve our aesthetic presentation, and do so without surgery, incisions or anesthesia.

Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau are the four neurotoxins (muscle relaxers) that are currently available for use in the United States and are also available at our New York City plasic surgeons office. These FDA approved products are injected to reduce wrinkles in the face, especially around the forehead and eyes.

Botox has been around longer than the other neurotoxins and is therefore the most well known. Just as many people refer to all facial tissues as "Kleenex," many people refer to all neurotoxins as Botox. Indeed, all three neurotoxins are various forms of botulinum toxin type A and they are all far more similar than different from one another.

There are small differences between the three types of injectable treatments and advantages to each product in particular circumstances. At the time of consultation, Dr. Rapaport will advise which neurotoxin he recommends for any given area to be treated. Dr. Rapaport is a New York based board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in the use of injectable treatments.

How Botulinum toxin is used

Depending on patient preference, Botox can be used to either completely freeze a muscle, or in lower doses they can just weaken the muscle or parts of the muscle. This is a matter of patient anatomy and patient preference, and is discussed with each patient individually by Dr. Rapaport at our New York City office.

Neurotoxins tend to remain effective for 3-6 months. When very small doses are used, the effect may be even more short lived. One area commonly treated with neurotoxin is the glabella. This is the area between the eyebrows that creates the 11 shaped vertical folds when a person scowls. Many patients simply do not want to appear angry in front of their co-workers or children, and take great pleasure in relaxing this area.

The horizontal lines across the forehead can also be treated with Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau, either to "freeze" the entire forehead, or with a variety of refined techniques to create an arch in the eyebrows.

Expectations for the procedure

Before treatment begins, Dr. Rapaport’s medical assistant will numb the treatment area with ice to any discomfort relating to pinpricks, or expose you to an alternative anesthetic as decided during your consultation. After carefully marking the strategically chosen entry points on the face, an ultra fine needle will be used to comfortably inject the product into the skin.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau is a brand new neuromodulator that provides a softer finish and lasts longer. Jeuveau treats the visible signs of aging by temporarily halting the constant motions of specifically targeted facial muscles, and creates a smoother, younger look while also preventing the formation of new lines. Jeuveau is an incredible alternative treatment now offered at Rapaport Plastic Surgery.

While BOTOX and Jeuveau work in similar ways, there are some patients who no longer respond to BOTOX as they did in the past. Jeuveau has a softer finish than that of BOTOX and may last longer, often up to six months. Dr. Rapaport will carefully evaluate your unique needs and goals to identify which neuromodulator will best help you achieve your aesthetic vision of facial rejuvenation.
