already undergone a mastectomy, breast reconstruction may be
an option for you. Breast reconstruction is a single

depend on the type of cancer, the type of treatment and the
physical appearance of your breasts. The timing of your
breast reconstruction should be discussed in person with
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, David P. Rapaport, MD at
his Manhattan, New York office. Early Breast Cancer
Detection helps saves lives. Breast reconstruction,

What is the 1998
Federal Breast Reconstruction Law: If you have health
insurance, your carrier must pay for your breast
reconstruction plastic surgery procedure. The 1998
Federal Breast Reconstruction Law requires all health
insurance companies to cover reconstruction of the breast on
which mastectomy has been performed, and surgery and
reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical
appearance.
When should you undergo breast reconstruction plastic surgery?
There are two paths to choose from when deciding to have
reconstructive breast surgery. Breast reconstruction may
begin at the time of the mastectomy, in which case is known
as "immediate breast reconstruction" or weeks, months, or
years thereafter, also known as "delayed" reconstruction.
What are the advantages of immediate breast reconstruction?
Reconstructing the breast immediately following the
mastectomy avoids additional operations and general
anesthesia at a later date. Furthermore, the breast
reconstructive process is generally easier due to the
absence of scar tissue from prior surgeries with the breast
skin retaining the size and shape of the original breast.
Perhaps most importantly, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon,
David P. Rapaport, MD can work with the surgeon who performs
the mastectomy surgery to help plan the best surgical
approach and scars to allow for as natural appearing a
result as possible.
Choices:
All women who are going to have or have had a mastectomy
have three basic choices concerning breast reconstruction
and should know that they have the right to make the choice
that best suits them:
1. The choice to say "Yes" or "No" to breast reconstruction.
2. The choice to have immediate or delayed reconstruction.
3. The choice to say which type of breast reconstruction
they want.
